An Apostle – what is

If you check a dictionary you will find several definitions:
1.  any important early Christian teacher, especially St. Paul.
2.  the first successful Christian missionary in a country or to a people.

But how does the Bible define an Apostle? During His ministry, the Lord Jesus called 12 men (Apostles) to follow Him. Luke 6:13 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;

One of them was lost: Mark 14:10 And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them.

This left eleven. After the resurrection/ascension of the Lord Jesus, Peter knew the position Judas held had to be filled:
Acts 1:20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
Then he proceeded to give the qualifications:
Acts 1:21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

They appointed two men, and then cast lots to see who would be the
12th Apostle to fulfill the great command and Matthias was then numbered among the apostles. See Acts 1:22-26.

Some 12 years later, as Israel continued to reject the resurrected Lord Jesus as their Messiah, the risen, ascended Lord Jesus selected Saul of Tarsus, to become the 13th Apostle, to go to the Gentiles. See Acts 9.

Moses and Paul

SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP

These two men are perhaps the greatest spiritual leaders the world has ever seen. Moses delivered the Law to the Jews (Exodus 21:1) and Paul brought the gospel of the Grace of God to the Gentiles (Acts 20:24).

MOSES was chosen by GOD to lead the Jewish Nation to serve God.

NUMBERS 12:3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)
DEUTERNOMY 4:1-2 Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you. Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
MARK 1:44 And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
MARK 10:3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?
MATTHEW 23:1-3 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
DEUTERNOMY 4:5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.
DEUTERNOMY 4:14 And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.
EXODUS 33:11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: …
NUMBERS 12:2 And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it. NUMBERS 12:6-9 And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. With him will I speak mouth to mouth,…

PAUL was chosen by GOD to offer salvation to the Gentiles.

ACTS 22:17-18 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance; And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
ACTS 26:16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
ROMANS 11:13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:
GALATIANS 1:11-12 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
1 CORINTHIANS 4:16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.
1 CORINTHIANS 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
EPHESIANS 3:1-4 For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)
1 TIMOTHY 1:12-16 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
1 TIMOTHY 6:3-5 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
GALATIANS 1:8-9 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
1 CORINTHIANS 11:23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
1 CORINTHIANS 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
1 THESOLONIANS 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
GALATIANS 1:11-12 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
2 CORINTHIANS 13:2-3 I told you before, and foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not spare: Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, which to you-ward is not weak, but is mighty in you.
2 CORINTHIANS 5:18-19 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Law verses Grace

GALATIANS 5:1-4 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

KINGDOM – Promised to the JEW

This Kingdom will be here, on Earth, with Jesus as King!

Exodus 19:6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
1 Samuel 10:25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

Yes, the Jews were promised an earthly nation, beginning with the Covenant with Abraham.

Abrahamic Covenant

Genesis 12:1-3 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: …
Genesis 15:18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
Genesis 17:2-21 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. … (read the text in your Bible)
Exodus 2:24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
Exodus 6:4-5 And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers. And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant.
Exodus 19:5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

A Covenant with the descendants of Abraham, Issac and Jacob with no end. This has never been completely fulfilled. It will be, after the time of Jacob’s trouble!

Jeremiah 30:7 Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble, but he shall be saved out of it.

Begotten

Psalm 2 is a prophetic Psalm and it speaks of the time when God will set up Christ as King, Ruler of all the earth. But the question is when did Christ become the BEGOTTEN Son?

⭆ Read Psalm Chapter 2. Look at verse seven again:
Psalm 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
Many teach that when Christ (Lord Jesus) was born in Bethlehem, that then He was the begotten son of God.
But what saith the Scripture? Psalm 2:7 says Christ is the Begotten Son of God.
Paul writing to the Hebrews (Jews) quotes this verse twice.
Hebrews 1:5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee?
Hebrews 5:5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
John states that the Word (Lord Jesus) is the only Begotten son of God and that He has always been from the beginning.
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
John quotes the Lord Jesus proclaiming Himself to be the only Begotten Son.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Again in his first letter to the Jews, John wrote:
1 John 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
Paul, preaching to the Jews in Antioch in Pisidia quoted the Psalm:
Acts 13:33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
The question remains, When did the Lord Jesus become the begotten son of God? Look again what Paul says in Acts 13:33 that he hath raised up Jesus again; Now read the next verse:
Acts 13:34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.
Paul affirms this when he writes to believers at Rome:
Romans 1:3-4 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
Then look at Revelation 1:5: And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
It appears that Christ became the only begotten Son of God, NOT at His birth, BUT at His RESURRECTION!
Now because of His resurrection and our belief in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, we too are begotten of Him, Children of God! Both Jew and Gentile.

1 Corinthians 4:15 For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.
1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1 John 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
1 John 5:18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

Church – what is it?

Image result for church
The word Church appears many times in the Scripture, does it always mean the same thing?

The dictionary defines Church as “a building used for public Christian worship.”

A biblical definition is “A group of Christians; church is a biblical word for “assembly.”

A called out Assembly.  The word church appears 76 times in the New Testament.

In Matthew 16:18, 18:17 it would have been better translated assembly, since it was addressing Jews.

In Acts (appears 18 times) again the word assembly would have been a better translation since the people assembled or meeting were Jews who had come to believe that Jesus was the Messiah and gotten baptized to confirm their belief.

In Romans through Philemon, Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, is writing to the CHURCHES (mostly Gentile believers) which he had established during his journeys.

Hebrews, written by Paul to Jewish believers again probably should have been translated assembly.

James, Peter, and John were Jews writing to Jewish believers and again should have been translated assemblies.

Revelation 2-3, letters to the 7 churches would have been better translated assemblies since they were 7 Jewish assemblies that existed in that day:

Revelation 1:11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

What is the Church? Yes, it is a building where people gather and meet to worship. But the true church is made up of all who have been saved (Romans 10:9-13) also called the Body of Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
Ephesians 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Pure

1. a. Having a homogeneous or uniform composition; not mixed: pure oxygen. b. Free of dirt, pollutants, infectious agents, or other unwanted elements: pure water. c. Containing nothing inappropriate or extraneous: pure thoughts.
2. a. Having no moral failing or guilt: “I felt pure and sweet as a new baby” (Sylvia Plath). b. Chaste; virgin.
3. Of unmixed blood or ancestry.

God, through the Blood of Christ, has made us PURE. Now the Apostle Paul instructs how to be PURE in this life:

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
1 Timothy 1:5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
1 Timothy 3:9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
1 Timothy 5:22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.
2 Timothy 1:3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
2 Timothy 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of pure conscience
Titus 1:15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

To summarize: think on these things, whatsoever things are pure, a pure conscience, a pure heart, keep thyself pure. For the believer all things are pure.

Understood Not

As we read the scripture, sometimes we forget it’s a progressive book. We are looking BACK and wonder why things occurred the way they did. For example, why did the Eleven disciples all scatter when Jesus was arrested? Why did they hide in the upper room after his crucifixion? Didn’t He tell them He was going to die? Didn’t He tell them He would rise again from the dead?  Yes, He did. Look at the following verses. Be sure to read them in their context:

Mark 9:32 But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.
Luke 2:50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
Luke 9:45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.

John 8:27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
John 10:6 This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.

John 12:16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

This last reference holds a key: ‘then remembered they’. Ah yes, after He appeared to them in His glorified body it all became clear to them. Then they became bold and preached the kingdom, that Jesus was their messiah.

Now we gentiles can learn through the writings of the Apostle Paul, our calling. To tell others of salvation, the gift of God, that we might live with Him in heaven for eternity.

Who is PAUL?

Image result for saul at stephen's stoning

Acts 7:57-58 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.

Acts 8:1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.
Acts 8:3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.
Acts 9:1-2 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.
Acts 9:3-6 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

Saul then became Paul:

Acts 13:9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him.

Galatians 1:11-14 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.

PAUL was/is the Apostle to the Gentiles. WAS while he lived! And IS through the epistles he wrote and God preserved for us today!

Romans 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
Romans 11:13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:
1 Corinthians 1:1 Paul called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,
2 Corinthians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, …
Galatians 1:1 Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)Ephesians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God,
Colossians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, …
1 Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;
2 Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God,
2 Timothy 1:11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
Titus 1:1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

All through his ministry he had to defend his calling. After all, he had persecuted the Jewish believers, even having them put to death. And he had rejected the Lord Jesus while he was on earth.

2 Corinthians 11:22-23 Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I. Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.

But, PAUL was/is the
Apostle to the Gentiles.

Sent by the Lord Jesus to built the Church, the Body of Christ!
