Matthew (Levi) was an Apostle; he was a tax collector before Jesus said come follow me! He was a Jew, highly educated and knew his scripture. He was looking for the Messiah and his kingdom. He was an eye witness to Jesus’ ministry and writes to Jewish Believers to show how Jesus fulfills the prophecy in the scripture which he quotes from heavily. He begins with the genealogy of Jesus to establish his right to being the Messiah (Matthew 1:1-17).
