Quoting the Scripture

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Old Testament - Life, Hope & Truth

These are words written by the Apostle Paul to his spiritual son, Timothy. When he wrote “All Scripture” he is referring to what we know as the Old Testament. The New testament has NOT been written yet. Many today ignore the Old Testament but not the writers of the New Testament. They referred to the OT often and many times quoted it. For example, Acts referrers to and quotes the OT some 88 times. The Apostle Paul, in his epistles continually cites the Old testament. The Lord Jesus quoted the Old testament over 70 times in his teachings. In the Gospels, (Matthew 14, Mark 19, Luke 19, John 12). James has over 30. Peter over 40. John’s epistles over 15. Jude 7 times. And John in the Revelation over 80. There’s an old saying “Hidden in the old, revealed in the new”. In each of the following postings it will be attempted to show the reference in the Old testament quoted by the New Testament writer.

Writing to the Corinthian believers, Paul reminds them, as they are going through temptation to remember the Scripture:
1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Yes, the Old testament has many truths for believers today. And many prophecies yet to be filled when the Body of Christ, the church is Raptured out of this world.
As written in Psalm 12:6-7 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
And to Quote the Lord Jesus: Matthew 24:35, Mark 13:31, Luke 21:33 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

John Quotes

John, the beloved Apostle wrote this Gospel. It appears to be written to all believers to affirm that Jesus was/is God in Flesh. He quotes some scripture but mostly tells the story of Jesus and his ministry. John 20:31 and 21:24-25 summarizes what and why he wrote.
20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
21:24-25 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
Isaiah 53:1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?
Isaiah 6:10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

Luke Quotes

Luke, the doctor, traveling companion of Paul wrote this Gospel around 60 AD. He was a Greek and the only Gentile Christian writer of the New Testament. The language of Luke reveals that he is an educated man. We learn in Colossians 4:14 that he is a physician. In this book Luke refers many times to sicknesses and diagnoses. Being a Greek and a doctor would explain his scientific and orderly approach to the book, giving great attention to detail in his accounts as he investigates the life and ministry of Jesus. Luke 1:1-4 gives the reason for his writing. He quotes from the scripture, Exodus, Leviticus, Isaiah, and Psalm, to help validate the life and ministry of Jesus. Listed are the direct quotes (not including what Jesus quoted) found in the Book of Luke.

Mark Quotes

Mark was not an Apostle; he was a follower (disciple) of Peter (his uncle) who later traveled with Paul and Barnabus. He wrote this Gospel around 70 AD making it one of the earliest written. It appears to be writing to all believers and narrates the ministry of Jesus from his baptism by John the Baptist to his death and resurrection. He quotes some scripture but mostly to tell the story of Jesus and his ministry. His writings may or may not have been firsthand accounts but they were inspired by the Holy Ghost. He quotes hardly any scripture writers, in fact only three, Malachi, Isaiah, and Psalm: (not including what Jesus quoted). However there are many references to OT Scripture if not Direct Quotes, obviously inspired by the H.S.

Mark 1:2-3 Matthew 3:3 Luke 3:4 John 1:23 As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.
Isaiah 40:3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Mark 11:9 Matthew 21:9 John 12:13 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
Psalm 118:26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord: we have blessed you out of the house of the Lord.
Mark 15:28 Luke 22:37 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.
Isaiah 53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors

Gospel Quotes

Gospels Quotes Old Testament Books King James Version (KJV)
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were considered unlearned and ignorant (Acts 4:13). They were never the less used by God (Holy Spirit) to preach, Quoting the Old Testament Scripture (Acts 1, 2, 3) and to write the Gospels to Document the ministry of Christ. Luke was used to document the transition from Jewish to Gentile ministries. Quoting O.T. scriptures, alluding to its teachings, also relying on many teachings of the Lord from the OT as they walked with Him over 3 years.
