Resurrection preached by His Apostles

Image result for resurrection preached by the apostles

During the 3 year ministry of the Lord Jesus, His apostles followed him and did as he instructed, believing him to be the Messiah, the coming King of Israel. But when he was crucified, they panicked and fled. But then, when He arose from the grave and walked with them for forty days, ascending into heaven, they became bold and Preached the resurrection. And Saul, after his conversion on the road to Damascus, also preached the resurrection.

Acts 1:22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
Acts 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
Acts 2:31-32 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Acts 3:15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.

Acts 3:26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
Acts 4:2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
Acts 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Acts 4:33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
Acts 5:30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
Acts 10:40-41 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
Acts 13:23 Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:
Acts 13:30 But God raised him from the dead:
Acts 13:33-34 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.
Acts 13:37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.
Acts 17:18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
Acts 17:31-32 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.
Acts 23:6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
Acts 24:15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
Acts 24:21 Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day.

1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1 Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

Without the resurrection, Christianity is no different from any other belief. The resurrection is our hope of eternal life, to be with Him.

144,000 Called of God

Just who are they? Many groups have claimed that THEY are part of the 144,000. But what saith the Scripture? The only place that they are mentioned is in the book of REVELATION. So, starting with 1st mention of the 144,000 in Revelation 7:4. Let’s see who are described: (fourteen facts)
And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.
1st it states they are from the tribes of Israel. That makes them Jews.
2nd each of the 12 tribes are listed (7:5-8) and it states 12,000 from each tribe. Ergo 12,000 x 12 = 144,000 All Jews!
3rd it states (7:3) that they are sealed (by God) in their foreheads.
Does this mean others can see the seal?
The next mention of the 144,00 is in Revelation 14:1. Is there more information about them?
Revelation 14:1 And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.
4th they are on Mount Sion with the LAMB. (That’s on earth in Israel.)
5th the seal is defined as HIS FATHER’S NAME in their forehead. (NOTE a study of Lamb reveals he is the Lord Jesus Christ)
Revelation 14:3 And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.
6th they sing a new song.
7th only they could sing the new song.
8th they were redeemed from the earth. (taken to heaven)
Revelation 14:4 These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.
9th they are men (not defiled with women).
10th they unmarried (virgins).
11th they follow the Lamb (believe him to be messiah).
12th they are the firstfruits (that’s a whole study).

Revelation 14:5 And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.
13th no guile (sly or cunning) in their mouth.
14th they are without fault (no sin).

Based on the fourteen facts listed above, taken from the book of Revelation, it appears the 144,000 are virgin Jewish men, protected by God, chosen at the beginning of the Tribulation period, who will take the gospel of the kingdom (Jesus is the Messiah and will rule as King) to the world during the Tribulation. Then they will be the FIRSTFRUITS (of Jews) taken to heaven (Bodily).

Lust

Noun – very strong sexual desire.
Verb – have a very strong sexual desire for someone
.

Wikipedia – Lust is a craving, it can take any form such as the lust for sexuality, lust for money or the lust for power. It can take such mundane forms as the lust for food as distinct from the need for food. Lust is a psychological force producing intense wanting for an object, or circumstance fulfilling the emotion.
Bible – uncontrolled or illicit sexual desire or appetite; lecherousness.
a passionate or overmastering desire or craving

The basic definition of lust is having a self-absorbed desire for an object, person, or experience. The Bible has a lot to say about lust. The Bible further defines lust as the root of all evil. Lust puts material things above God. It is not material things or money that is evil; it is the lust of material things. Exactly what does the scripture say? The key verse is in 1 John.
1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Note: pride of life = LUST to be the best

And it all began in the Garden of Eden:
Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

good for food lust of the flesh
pleasant to the eyes lust of the eyes
make one wise pride of life

Age of the Earth

Two Basic WORLD-views:

CHART NOT TO SCALE

What is the Creation/Evolution Debate all About?

Time is Crucial to Evolution. Creationists believe with GOD all things are possible. Evolution is interpreted in light of the Geologic Column.

In the GEOLOGIC COLUMN* each rock layer represents a different geologic age. Everything is interpreted in light of the Geologic Column. It becomes like the Bible to Evolution.

EVOLUTION’S GEOLOGIC COLUMN

135 Cretaceous Dinosaurs dying out
180 Jurassic 1st mammals and birds
225 Triassic Reptiles – dinosaurs
275 Permian Reptiles plentiful

*Who designed this chart? Who made it official? When did it first come into being?

(1) Adam or Ape?
Was your great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandpa a Tasier monkey?

(2) Mixing Truth with Error.
Example: Evolution & Textbooks – Adolf Hitler said, “If you tell a lie long enough, and often enough, the people will believe it.”
Billions of years ago… (Fact or Faith)?

(3) What is TRUE SCIENCE?
Science must be observed, tested, and reproduced in the laboratory, or else it is not true science. (The Nature of Science – Prentice Hall – 1993)

The basic steps in the scientific method are:

  1. Stating or defining the problem.
  2. Gathering information on the problem.
  3. Forming a hypothesis (or trial answer).
  4. Performing experiments to test the hypothesis.
  5. Recording and analyzing data.
  6. Stating a conclusion.
  7. Repeating the work.

(4) Define the problem.
How old is earth?

Image result for age of the earth

(5) Gather the information.
Data: Maximum Age

  1. Planets cooling Should be cold
  2. Moon leaving 30 million years (?)
  3. Stalactite formations 1 inch per year
  4. Salt in Ocean 62 million years
  5. Ocean sediments 14 million years
  6. Sun shrinking 7 million years
  7. Helium in atmosphere 2 million years
  8. Mississippi river deposits 30,000 years
  9. Earth slowing (under) 30,000 years
  10. Magnetic field (under) 10,000 years
  11. Oil pressure (under) 10,000 years
  12. Saturn’s rings (under) 10,000 years
  13. Short-period comets (under) 10,000 years
  14. Niagara Falls eroding 9,900 years
  15. Longevity chart 6,000 years
  16. Moon Dust 6,000 years
  17. Oldest tree 4,300 years
  18. Coral reef 4,200 years
  19. Population chart 4,000 years

(6) Forming A Hypothesis.
What kind of hypothesis would one form from the information? Here’s where the problem is, Evolution is not formed on the information. All the data is interpreted in the light of the assumption that the geologic column is true.

(7) Testing the Hypothesis
“It started with a BIG BANG!”

1. The First Law of Thermodynamics: Matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed. None taking place anywhere in the universe today. Where did it come from?
Evolution says: “MAYBE it created itself.” Then at some point in time you have to start with nothing. Can nothing create something?
Hebrews 4:3 – God’s works were finished on day six.

2. The Second Law of Thermodynamics: Everything tends toward disorder. Evolution proposes upward trend. Basic trend in nature is downward. Psalms 102:25-27 Sign of the curse

3. Problems with the “Big Bang”:
a. Where did all the matter and energy come from?
b. Explosions cause chaos, not order.
c. The galaxies are not arranged haphazardly.
d. The stars and planets would keep going, not stop and start orbiting a fixed point.
e. Law of Conservation of Angular Momentum. Anything that flies off from something spinning fast, will be spinning in the same direction as the original object. Example: kids on a merry-go-round.

(8) Don’t All Scientists Believe in Evolution?
NO! 10,000 professional scientists in the USA believe in Biblical Creation. In a 1993 Gallup poll, only 11% of the United States population believed in atheistic evolution. Why do they control what goes into the textbooks?
“No matter how reasonable the hypothesis seems, it cannot be accepted until supported by a large number of testing. The research worker must be open-minded enough to change or drop a hypothesis if the evidence does not support it.” (Modern Biology – Otto, Towle, and Bradley – 1981)
Why is the idea of an old earth so intensely protected by the evolutionists?

(9) There Are Only Two Options:
1 – Somebody made the world, or
2 – The world made itself
If there wasn’t enough time for the world to make itself, then that only leaves one option, somebody made it. The Bible says that somebody is the Lord Jesus Christ.

(10) Have We Been Brainwashed?
If we see something mixed in with something else long enough, after awhile we begin to think it belongs there.

Creation vs Evolution

Isn’t Creation just a religious belief?

I. What is Evolution?
A gradual emergence of present life kinds over aeons of time, with emergence of complex and diversified kinds of life from simpler kinds and ultimately from nonliving matter, all through natural processes.

Image result for evolution

II. What is Creationism?

Creationism says that all basic animal and plant types (the created kinds) were brought into existence by acts of a supernatural Creator using special processes which are not in operation today.

Image result for Creationism

III. What is Science?

Science comes form the Latin word scire meaning to know. Science has to do with investigation and substantiation.

Image result for science

The basic steps in the scientific method are:

  1. Stating or defining the problem.
  2. Gathering information on the problem.
  3. Forming a hypothesis (or trial answer).
  4. Performing experiments to test the hypothesis.
  5. Recording and analyzing data.
  6. Stating a conclusion.
  7. Repeating the work.
(The Nature of Science – Prentice Hall – 1993)
SCIENCE must be observed, tested, and reproduced in the laboratory, or else it is not true science.

IV. Science has to do with the present.
We can only observe what exists right now. No living scientist was alive to see evolution taking place in the past, no have they observed it taking place today. They can BELIEVE that it did, but they cannot prove it. It takes an act of faith.

We cannot prove that divine Creation took place. We weren’t there. There was someone else there however, and He gave us a written record of how it happened. But we cannot prove it. It takes an act of faith.

V. Is evolution science?
Can evolution be observed? “Evolution, at least in the sense that Darwin speaks of it, cannot be detected within the life time of a single observer.” (nor in the life time of many observers).
David B. Kitts, Ph.D., University of Oklahoma “Paleontology and evolutionary theory”. Evolution, vol. 28, Sep 1994, p. 466

Can evolution be tested in the laboratory?
“It is easy enough to make up stories of how one gave rise to another, and to find reasons why the stages should be favored by natural selection. But such stories are not part of science, for there is no way of putting them to the test.”
Personal letter (written 4-10-79) from Dr. Colin Patterson, British Museum of Natural History, to Luther D. Sunderland

Does evidence support Evolution?
a. “I know that, at least in paleoanthropology, data are still so sparse that theory heavily influences interpretations. Theories have, in the past, clearly reflected out current ideologies instead of the actual data.”
Dr. David Pilbeam (Anthropologist, Yale), “Rearranging our family tree”. Human Nature, June 1978, p.45
b. “Facts do not speak for themselves”; they are read in the light of theory. Creative thought, in science as much as in the arts, is the motor of changing opinion. Science is a quintessentially human activity, not a mechanized, robot-like accumulation of objective information, leading by laws of logic to inescapable interpretation.”
Stephen J Gould (Professor of Geology and Paleontology, Harvard University), ‘The validation of continental drift’ in his book “EVER SINCE DARWIN” Burnett Books, 1978 pp.161-162

VI. Is Evolution Religious?

“In fact, evolution became in a sense a scientific religion; almost all scientists have accepted it and many are prepared to bend their observation to fit in with it.”
H.S. Lipson, FRS (Professor of Physics, University of Manchester, UK), ‘A physicist looks at evolution’. Physics Bulletin, vol. 31, 1980, p. 136

“The fact of evolution is the backbone of biology, and biology is thus in the peculiar position of being a science founded on an unproved theory – is it then a science or a faith? Belief in the theory of evolution is thus exactly parallel to belief in special creation – both are concepts which believers know to be true but neither, up the present, has been capable of proof.”
L. Harrison Matthews, FRS, Introduction to Darwin’s The Origin of Species, J.M.Dent & Sons Ltd, London, 1971, p.xi

“One must conclude that, contrary to the established and current wisdom a scenario describing the genesis of life on earth by chance and natural causes which can be accepted on the basis of fact and not faith has not yet been written.”
Hubert P. Yockey (Army Pulse Radiation Facility, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, USA), ‘A calculation of the probability of spontaneous biogenesis by information theory’. Journal of Theoretical Biology, vol. 67, 1977, p. 396

Fossils exist in the present. However, they do not come with dates stamped on them to tell us how old they are. Evolution is a belief system about the past based on the words of men who were not there, but are trying to explain the existence of the world we live in, without the existence of God or any divine acts of His part.

VII. But is Special Creation Scientific?
Creation is, of course, unproven and unprovable by scientific method. Creation therefore, as evolution, can only serve as a hypothesis, or, trial answer as to how and why life came into existence. Creation, therefore, would be no more religious and less scientific than evolution. However, to many well informed scientists, the creation model seems to be far superior to the evolution model as an explanation for origins.

Naked and (UN)Ashamed

Should we walk around naked? Should we all become nudist? Is there anything wrong with being naked or a nudist? If we believe the Bible is God’s Word (The word of GOD) then we should see what it has to say. Let’s begin in Genesis: (did not God create man naked?)
Genesis 2:25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Naked and Unashamed, that’s the way mankind began. But what happened?

Genesis 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
How did Adam answer God:
Genesis 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
What else does the scripture have to say about being Naked?
Genesis 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
There are many more Old Testament references to being Naked, none good: Exodus 32:25, 1 Samuel 19:24, 2 Chronicles 28:15,19 Job 1:21,22:6-7,10, 26:6
Ecclesiastes 5:15, Isaiah 20:2-4, 58:7 Lamentations 4:21, Ezekiel 16:7,22,39
Ezekiel 18:7,16, 23:29, Hosea 2:3, Amos 2:16, Micah 1:8,11, Habakkuk 3:9
Again in the New Testament, being Naked is not looked on as good:
Matthew 25:36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me:
Matthew 25:38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, …
Matthew 25:43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye
Matthew 25:44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did …
The above is a parable, teaching about a time to come, Tribulation.
Other NT references about being naked:
Mark 14:51-52, John 21:7, Acts 19:16, 1 Corinthians 4:11, 2 Corinthians 5:3,
Hebrews 4:13, James 2:15, Revelation 16:15, 17:16,
It would appear that the scripture has a lot to say about being naked, and even though we enter into the world naked and shall depart from it naked (without any world values), God would prefer us to be clothed as we walk this world and WILL provide robes of righteousness for us when we join Him for all eternity.
Revelation 6:11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

Revelation 7:9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
Revelation 7:13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
Revelation 7:14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Devices/Wiles of the Devil/Satan 1

Image result for wiles of the devil scripture"

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
2 Corinthians 2 :11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

Devices or Wiles of Satan, The Devil:

DOUBT – Many a young believer will doubt their salvation, especially when they sin, things are falling apart all around them. This is a device of the devil. God would not have us DOUBT our salvation.
Romans 10:9-13 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

FEAR – another device of Satan: Fear is not of God. We should not fear death.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
1 Corinthians 15:55-57 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 2:15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
And Paul (who suffered much) reminded believers to fear no man:
Hebrews 13:6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

NO HOPE – HOPELESSNESS – Satan wants us to believe we have no hope, that all is hopeless. This is not from God. Remember Job? (read chapters 1-3)
Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

WORRY– another wile from Satan. He wants the believer to worry about everything. But Paul offers a solution:
Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

UNFORGIVENESS – Satan would love for a believer to think they are unforgiven. But Paul reminds us that through HIS blood we have forgiveness:
Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

BITTERNESS – Another trap from the devil. Bitterness or being bitter hurts our testimony.
Ephesians 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
Hebrews 12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

HATE – Believers should not HATE someone. But hate sin:
Romans 7:15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
Paul reminds us of what we were:
Titus 3:3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

ENVY – The devil loves to get into the mind of a believer with this device:
Romans 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
Romans 13:13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
1 Corinthians 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
2 Corinthians 12:20 For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults:
Galatians 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another.
Philippians 1:15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:
1 Timothy 6:4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
Titus 3:3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

To defeat the DEVICES or WILES of the devil, the apostle Paul wrote:
1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Satan – A Real Being

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Many people today, and through out history have scoffed at the idea of an evil being called SATAN. If an individual does not believe the Holy Bible then they have no reason to believe. But SATAN is mentioned by this name and several others all through the Scripture. This study will only look at the occurrences of SATAN. He is first mentioned in Chronicles where he provoked King David.

1 Chronicles 21:1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

To get an insight to the spiritual battle between God and Satan we turn to the first 2 chapters of the book of Job (Probably the oldest book in the Bible).

Job 1:6-9 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
Job 1:12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
Job 2:1-4 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
Job 2:6-7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life. So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

Resist the Devil

James, writing “to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad”, warned them to “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 1:1; 4:7

And the Apostle Peter (1 Peter 1:1) writing to “the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia” (fellow Jews), warns them:
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”
(1 Peter 5:8-9)

The devil is far more powerful and intelligent (as well as subtle and seductive in his malignant purposes) than any combination of human enemies we could ever face, and we would be utterly unable to defeat him with our own human resources. Yet, God’s Word makes it plain that we are neither to yield to him nor flee from him. As the Apostle Paul writes to believers, we must “put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” We have “the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the [wicked one],” and also “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:11,16-17).

But how can we resist such a mighty foe? As in our text, we must constantly maintain sobriety and vigilance against his enticements, and be careful to remain “steadfast in the faith.” Otherwise, the pseudo-intellectualism and social peer pressure to which we are subjected daily could quickly persuade us to compromise the faith, or even to depart from the faith.

We are commanded not to yield and not to compromise. Instead, This mighty sword with which we can make Satan flee from us is literally “the sayings of God”—that is, an appropriate individual word from the complete Word of God. This was the instrument with which the Lord Jesus Himself resisted the devil, parrying each temptation with an incisive thrust of Scripture. The result then—as it will be now with us also—was that the devil “departed from him for a season” (Luke 4:13).
