Names of God

In the Old Testament there are many names for God. (Some say there are over 70 names, each having to do with God’s relationship to Israel). But just looking at some names we use in the Church today:

The name ‘Jesus‘ comes from Hebrew origins Yeshua or Yeshua.

Christ the Greek translation of the Hebrew word rendered “Messiah” which is equivalent to the Hebrew word translated “Anointed One.”

Messiah comes from the Hebrew word mashiach and means “anointed one” or “chosen one.” The Greek equivalent is the word Christos or, in English, Christ.

Emmanuel means “God with us” In the Old Testament it occurs only in Isaiah 7:14 and 8:8
Sometimes translated Immanuel.

Joshua comes from the Hebrew name “Yehoshua,” meaning “God is deliverance.”

Yeshua (transliterated in the English Old Testament as Jeshua), is a late form of the Biblical Hebrew name Yehoshua (Joshua),

Yehoshua is derived from yeho (meaning God) and shua (meaning to deliver or save). The letter Y was changed to an I in Latin and Greek and became a J in English. Jehoshua was eventually shortened to Joshua.

Hosea means “salvation”

God is the Answer

Read Psalm 42-43

In the text the Psalmist gives solutions to our complex problems which include:
Inter …. Problems within
Outer … Problems caused by others
Outer Circumstances … things that happen beyond our control
The text begins by telling us to seek after God. To clarify:
Psalm 10:4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.
Psalm 14:1-3 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Psalm 36:1 The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.
Psalm 53:1-3 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
The Apostle Paul writes of this:
Romans 3:10-18 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes.

All the above STATE that no man seeks after GOD!
HE SEEKS US … through HIS Word.

Why God?

Read 1 PETER 4
Have you ever said to God … Why Me?
Perhaps there has been an .. Accident … Argument … Death …
Problem with Family or at work …Sickness … Sin …
And you’ve said, Why Me God?
Think of Missionaries who have died while serving God in another country.
Some of disease and even some murdered.
Of young Believers, who have everything going for them .. Why God?
The sufferings of Christ come to mind … His words “ And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Matthew 27:46
Is it wrong to ask WHY GOD?
All unbelievers and believers suffer because of SIN.
Unbelievers suffer:
To show them their need for God
As a result of their own folly
Believers suffer:
Because of spiritual Conflict. Satan vs God — Job 1-2, 1 Peter 5:8-9
To teach obedience. Hebrews 5:8
To teach us God’s Grace. 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
So, we can relate to others. 2 Corinthians 1:3-24 (vs 4-6)
To witness to others. 2 Timothy 2:8-10
To discipline us. Hebrews 12:6-11
Why suffering? 1 Peter 4:10-11 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Your God Part 2

And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.” (Exodus 3:14)
This unique name of God was given to stress the truth that He is timeless. The name “LORD” (Hebrew YHWH = Yahweh, or Jehovah) is essentially the same, conveying the truth that He is the eternal, self-existing One.

The Lord Jesus Christ appropriated this divine name to Himself when He told the Jews: “Before Abraham was [i.e., ‘was born’], I am” (John 8:58). Correctly assuming that this statement was nothing less than a direct claim to identity with God, the Jews immediately (but unsuccessfully) attempted to stone Him to death as a blasphemer.

As the I AM, the Lord Jesus Christ is, indeed, everything, and He has revealed Himself to us under many beautiful symbols. It is well known that there are seven great “I ams” in the gospel of John, each of which is rich with spiritual depth of meaning. They can be listed as follows:

I am the bread of life . . . the living bread (John 6:35, 51).
“I am the light of the world . . . the light of life
(John 8:12).
“I am the door of the sheep”
(John 10:7).
“I am the good shepherd . . . [who] giveth his life for the sheep”
(John 10:11).
“I am the resurrection, and the life”
(John 11:25).
“I am the way, the truth, and the life”
(John 14:6).
“I am the true vine
(John 15:1).

It is well known that this magnificent self-assertion of the Lord permeates the whole Bible, from its first use in Genesis 15:1, “I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward,” to its final occurrence in Revelation 22:16,I am . . . the bright and morning star.” And all these beautiful figures help us to pray more fervently “that God may be all in all” (1 Corinthians 15:28).
