Bride of Christ

Many a sermon has been preached on this subject. Always pointing out that the Bride is the Church (Believers) and the Bridegroom is Christ. Now it is interesting that the term “Bride of Christ” is never used in the scripture. The word “BRIDE” is found in 5 verses in the New Testament, so let’s look at these:

John 3:29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
If you put this verse back into context, it is John the Baptist answer to the Jews asking him if he were the Christ. It would appear that the Bridegroom he speaks of is Christ (Jesus whom he had baptized). But who is the Bride? So let’s look elsewhere the Bride and Bridegroom are mentioned. They are all in the Book of Revelation written by the Apostle John.
Revelation 18:23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the brideshall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
The text (Chapter 18) appears to be speaking about events near or at the end of the seven years of Tribulation. The Bridegroom, Christ (established in John 3:29) is done speaking, and so is the Bride. But who or what is the Bride?  Revelation 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a brideadorned for her husband.
The text (Chapter 21) is at the end of the seven year Tribulation and the start of
Eternity. Of course the Husband is the Bridegroom: Christ. And the Bride, could it be the holy city, new Jerusalem?

Revelation 21:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.
In the same text we find a further description of the Bride, she’s the Lamb’s wife. We find the answer to that in the following Text:
John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
John 1:36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! In the last text where the Bride is mentioned in in Revelation 22:17.
Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
The Spirit mentioned is the Holy Spirit.
See Luke 11:13, Ephesians 1:13, 4:30, and 1 Thessalonians 4:8. The Holy Spirit is mentioned many or times in scripture, usually by Spirit.
Part of the Godhead; God, Son and Spirit.

In conclusion it would appear that the Bridegroom is Christ
and the Bride is the new Jerusalem, a city for the Jews which Christ will rule
from (a continuance of David’s throne). A fulfillment of God’s Covenant with
Abraham and all Jews.
ISAIAH 62  Jerusalem, the Bride

An interesting side note. It appears in Isaiah 54:5-6 that Israel is called the wife of God. Speaking to Israel the Lord says:
Isaiah 54:5-6  For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called. For the Lord hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God.

Not Yet

Matthew 16:9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

The Lord Jesus came to earth to present the Kingdom of Heaven to the Jews (as promised throughout the Old Testament). And His followers were expecting Him to over throw the Romans and set up this kingdom. But He had to keep warning them NOT YET, there were things that had to be fulfilled first:

Matthew 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
Mark 8:17 And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?
Mark 11:13 And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.
John 2:4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
John 7:6 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.
John 7:8 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast: for my time is not yet full come.
John 7:30 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
John 7:39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
John 8:20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
John 20:17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

The Apostle Paul writing to the Jewish believers continued to tell them NOT YET:

Hebrews 2:8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
Hebrews 9:8 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:
Hebrews 12:4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
And even today as we are  “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; (Titus 2:13)”  We need to remember, though everything has been fulfilled, it’s NOT YET, but Soon!

Rapture thru Eternity

This age will be consummated.

Joel 2:28-32 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:  And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.  And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.  The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lordcome.  And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.

Acts 2:25-28  For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:  Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:  Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.  Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
Psalm 16:8-11 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Acts 2:34-35  For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
Psalm 110:1  The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Acts 3:22-23 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. 23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
Deut 18:15 The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
Deut 18:19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
Acts 3:25  Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
Gen 12:3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
Gen 18:18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

Born Again

Prior to the election of Jimmy Carter, 1977-80, rarely (outside of Church) did one hear the term “Born Again”. Then it appeared all over the place. In sports if a player who had been playing poorly and now was much improved it was said “it’s like he’s been born again”. Anytime an individual improved, comments were “They’ve been Born Again”. And the trend continues even today. It’s amazing that this term is only used three times in the scripture. Twice by the Lord Jesus as he spoke to Nicodemus, (John 3) and then by the Apostle Peter as he wrote, “to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia”, to believing Jews.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
John 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
As we understand the term, we believe it means to get right with God and have eternal life after death. But we only find it in the above scripture.
Matthew, Mark and Luke, when speaking of being right with God and eternal life uses the word SAVED. And the majority of these were words spoken by the Lord Himself:
Matthew 1:21, 10:22, 16:25, 18:11, 19:25, 24:13
Mark 8:35, 10:26, 13:13, 13:20, 16:16
Luke 8:12, 9:24, 9:56, 17:33, 18:26, 19:10
John also quoted the Lord Jesus using the term saved.
John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
John 5:34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
John 12:47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Even after the resurrection the term saved was continued by the Apostles:
Acts 2:21, Acts 2:47, Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Acts 15:11, Acts 16:30-31
And as they wrote their epistles to believing Jews, they continued to use saved both for a relationship with God in this life and eternal life.

Blood – The Benefits

Blood, the Benefits of Christ’s

There are those who want to remove the blood from scripture and song. They say it makes Christianity a gory religion and just the fact that Jesus died for us is enough. But what saith the scripture? Let’s start with the words of Jesus:
Matthew 26:28, Mark 14:24 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Luke 22:20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
John 6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.  Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.  He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
To summarize what Jesus said about HIS BLOOD: remission of sins, shed for many, shed for you, hath eternal life, dwelleth in me (Christ).
Looks like Jesus taught HIS BLOOD was important.
The Apostle Paul wrote much of the blood of Christ:
Romans 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, …
Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
1 Corinthians 10:16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, …
Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
Colossians 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, …
And to Jewish believer’s Paul wrote:
Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from …
Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Hebrews 10:19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
Hebrews 13:12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.
At Ephesus, Paul reminded the church elders:
Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
And Peter, to his fellow Jews wrote:
1 Peter 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, … But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
John also wrote of the importance of the blood:
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
Revelation 7:14 … These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

As the hymn writer penned:  “What can wash away my sin, nothing but the blood of Jesus”
