A ship is a large watercraft designed for travel across the surface of a body of water, carrying cargo or passengers, or in support of specialized tasks such as warfare, oceanography and fishing. Ships are generally distinguished from boats, based on size, shape, load capacity and purpose.

A vessel larger than this is customarily classed as a ship, although the word boat is often applied to certain working vessels—such as tugboat—that may be of considerable size.
