Is it I?

While Jesus lingered with the twelve
At supper in the upper room
Judas Iscariot sat near
His dark eyes brooding in the gloom

That hour was Jesus sorrowful
And said, “One of you here with me
Shall soon betray the Son of Man
And Judas reddened guiltily

They all drew back in great surprise
And one by one gave the cry
That deeply touched His troubled heart
“Lord, is it I? Lord, is it I?

Sadly, He looked on each of them
“It is the one here at My side
That dips his hand within the dish
But woe to him!” the Master cried

Then Judas asked, “Is it I?”
His evil face was drawn and white
Jesus replied, “Lo, thou has said”
And Judas fled into the night

The Master spoke a last farewell
And when they rose and sang a hymn
They went out of the upper room
Into the garden, cool and dim
