What Must I Do to be Saved? Part 2

When we believe that, our next step is found in Paul’s letter to the Church in Rome:
Romans 10:9-13  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Confess (speak) with your mouth, tell someone that you believe the Gospel, (Christ died, was buried, and rose again) and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead. Now, when you do that, it states YOU SHALL BE SAVED!!  Is that all there is to IT? Yes, it is that simple. As Paul wrote to the Church in Ephesus:
Ephesians 2:8-10  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

SAVED THROUGH FAITH – GIFT OF GOD – that’s salvation! Saved from the wrath of God; Saved from an eternal separation from God for all eternity. Salvation is simple. The hard part is living as a Christian. But look at verse 10 again:
Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

His workmanship, ordained, then we should walk,

God will do it for you, if you will let him.

As Paul wrote to the Thessalonian Church:
1 Thessalonians 5:24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

Yes, God, the Lord Jesus Christ, will live in you and perform what he wants in your life. One more thought as you read these verses: they are SCRIPTURE, the Word of God.

What Kind of Body do the Dead have in Heaven? Part 2

On His resurrection day, many graves were opened and bodies came out of the graves Matthew 27:52-53. Were these raised bodies like Lazarus
(John 11:14-44) only to die later? (Lazarus did not come out of the grave with a glorified body). Or did these perhaps follow the Lord Jesus into heaven after His ascension? The scripture is silent on this.

So, the souls/spirits in Paradise had a form (body) that was recognizable to them and to anyone else who might have seen them. But what about today, since the Lord ascended into Heaven? One dies, the body is buried, cremated or otherwise disposed of, prayerfully in a proper way. Soul/Spirit go to be with the Lord (Paul words absent from the body present with the Lord,
2 Corinthians 5:6-8). Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.). We know that the departed do not receive a glorified (Flesh and Bone) body, that is not given until the rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). Paul expounds on this glorified body (1 Cor 15:35-58).
But what about now? Those Souls/Spirits that are in Heaven right now. It is apparent from the brief study above, they have a form (body) that is identifiable to all and they are in perfect peace and happiness. But we who alive look for that blessed hope (Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;) and our glorified bodies.
1 Corinthians 15:51-52 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Resurrection

Image result for resurrection

1 Corinthians 15:12-19 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
Believed and Spoken of in the Old Testament:
Job 19:25-27 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: …
Isaiah 26:19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: … and the earth shall cast out the dead.
Daniel 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
Daniel 12:13 But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.
Hosea 13:14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: …
Five Resurrections:
First Resurrection: Christ Matt 28:1-10 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

What Kind of Body do the Dead have in Heaven?

Image result for our heavenly body

1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

A loved one dies! Their soul and spirit depart from the Body. The Body is Buried, Cremated or otherwise disposed of, prayerfully in a proper way. But what of the Soul and Spirit? Before we see what the New Testament teaches, let’s start in the old Testament.
In Genesis most of the time it says of a person “and he died”. But then we come to Enoch (Genesis 5:21-24). VS 24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. Body, Soul and Spirit.

Then the Old Testament goes on “and he died” until we get to Elijah
(2 Kings 2:2) And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. (2 Kings 2:11) And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. Body, Soul and Spirit.

These two men went to be with the Lord in bodies of Flesh, Blood and Bone/Soul and Sprit (not a glorified body). But where did they go? The Lord Jesus had to be the first to rise from the dead and ascend into Heaven with a Body of Flesh and Bone, He had shed his blood on Calvary.
(1 Corinthians 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept).

Now from the New Testament: Matthew 17:3-4, Mark 9:4-5, Luke 9:30-33 (And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.). These men, Moses and Elias, had BODIES and they were recognized by the disciples, they heard them speak. (Now Moses had died (Deut 34:5-6) and was buried. Elias (Elijah) had been taken to Heaven in a whirlwind). Yet here they were, in bodies that were recognizable and speaking. Bodies of flesh, blood and bone, soul and spirit?

In Luke 16:19-31, The Lord Jesus tells a story, giving us a glimpse of what happened in death up and to the time of His resurrection and ascension into Heaven.
In Luke 23:43 The Lord Jesus, on the cross, verified to the thief, that Paradise was a real place that the soul/spirit go to upon death. Either that or He lied to the thief that day.

The location of Paradise was in the center of the earth: Matthew 12:40 (For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.), Ephesians 4:9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?). And He went there to set free those who dwelt there:
1 Peter 3:19 (By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;). But what did they look like? It is evident they could see each other Luke 16:19-31. They must have had bodies. The rich man could see and identify Abraham and Lazarus. He could feel pain and wanted Lazarus to dip his finger in cool water and cool his tongue. (BODIES!)

Resurrection promised in the Gospels

Image result for death of christ

The Scripture listed below will show that the resurrection was taught, promised and fulfilled. During His ministry, even though the Lord told them bluntly about his death burial and resurrection, they did not understand until after it happened. And after his ascension into heaven, they preached it.

Matthew 11:5, Luke 7:22 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
Matthew 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
Luke 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
Matthew 17:9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.
Matthew 17:23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.
Luke 14:14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
Luke 18:33 And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.
Luke 20:35-38 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
John 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
John 11:24-25 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
Matthew 20:19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.
Matthew 26:32, Mark 14:28 But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.
Matthew 27:64-64 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

And then it was fulfilled:

Matthew 28:6-7, Luke 24:6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
Mark 16:6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
Mark 16:9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.
Luke 24:34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
Mark 16:14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.
John 21:14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
Luke 24:46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
John 20:9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
John 2:22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

Resurrection preached by His Apostles

Image result for resurrection preached by the apostles

During the 3 year ministry of the Lord Jesus, His apostles followed him and did as he instructed, believing him to be the Messiah, the coming King of Israel. But when he was crucified, they panicked and fled. But then, when He arose from the grave and walked with them for forty days, ascending into heaven, they became bold and Preached the resurrection. And Saul, after his conversion on the road to Damascus, also preached the resurrection.

Acts 1:22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
Acts 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
Acts 2:31-32 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Acts 3:15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.

Acts 3:26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
Acts 4:2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
Acts 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Acts 4:33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
Acts 5:30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
Acts 10:40-41 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
Acts 13:23 Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:
Acts 13:30 But God raised him from the dead:
Acts 13:33-34 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.
Acts 13:37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.
Acts 17:18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
Acts 17:31-32 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.
Acts 23:6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
Acts 24:15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
Acts 24:21 Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day.

1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1 Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

Without the resurrection, Christianity is no different from any other belief. The resurrection is our hope of eternal life, to be with Him.

Born Again

Prior to the election of Jimmy Carter, 1977-80, rarely (outside of Church) did one hear the term “Born Again”. Then it appeared all over the place. In sports if a player who had been playing poorly and now was much improved it was said “it’s like he’s been born again”. Anytime an individual improved, comments were “They’ve been Born Again”. And the trend continues even today. It’s amazing that this term is only used three times in the scripture. Twice by the Lord Jesus as he spoke to Nicodemus, (John 3) and then by the Apostle Peter as he wrote, “to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia”, to believing Jews.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
John 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
As we understand the term, we believe it means to get right with God and have eternal life after death. But we only find it in the above scripture.
Matthew, Mark and Luke, when speaking of being right with God and eternal life uses the word SAVED. And the majority of these were words spoken by the Lord Himself:
Matthew 1:21, 10:22, 16:25, 18:11, 19:25, 24:13
Mark 8:35, 10:26, 13:13, 13:20, 16:16
Luke 8:12, 9:24, 9:56, 17:33, 18:26, 19:10
John also quoted the Lord Jesus using the term saved.
John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
John 5:34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
John 12:47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Even after the resurrection the term saved was continued by the Apostles:
Acts 2:21, Acts 2:47, Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Acts 15:11, Acts 16:30-31
And as they wrote their epistles to believing Jews, they continued to use saved both for a relationship with God in this life and eternal life.
