Paul (Saul) was a Jew who was well on his way up in Judaism (Acts 9:1-2, 26:4-5, 10-11 Gal 1:13-14, Phil 3:4-6). So he knew his scripture (Old Testament) and as he writes his epistles, the Holy Spirit brings these things to mind and reveals the hidden truths for the believers in Christ. Paul’s Epistle to the believers at Ephesus (1:1) was written around 64 AD to Gentile Believers (2:11). He drew upon the scriptures (our Old Testament) because just as today the SCRIPTURE (OT and NT) are our authority. Paul sets out to explain the believers position IN CHRIST since Salvation and he calls for unity among believers (4:3-6). Paul’s Epistle to the believers at Galatia (1:1,2) was written around 58 AD to Gentile Believers (2:2) who were being troubled by other gospels (1:6-9). Jews were coming to Galatia and trying to mix Law with Grace. The reason for the epistle; justification is in Christ NOT the Law (2:16). He drew upon the scriptures (our Old Testament) to refute the false teaching of these Jews, “that faith plus works equals salvation”. He assures us that Faith in Christ plus nothing (2:21, 3:11) puts us into this relationship with God.
