THE EXPERIENCE OF PRAYER

Matthew 6:5-8

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

Jesus made prayer a priority experience.  (vs 5)Hands praying

He began his day with prayer.  (Mark 1:35)

He bathed his life (and ministry) in prayer.  (Mark 1:21-39)

He strengthened his spirit with prayer (Matt 26:42)

Jesus made prayer a personal experience. (vs 6)

Most prayer should be one-on-one with God.

All prayer should be conversational with God.

Jesus made prayer a productive experience. (Vs 6)

Prayer is not primarily about answers.
– not for bringing our “wish list” to God
– not about having our request granted

Prayer is primarily about relationship.
– it is about fellowship with God
– it is about spending time with God

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Christians need to experience prayer.Drawing

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
